Tsui no Sora - finished!
First of all, huge props to Mon Panache! for their hard work in porting the entire game to renpy. The atmosphere of the game is greatly due to not just the art or music but the GUI too. Without it, the experience would be a lot more dull.
Yukito's POV introduces you to everything and I didn't feel much for it besides just setting everything up. Kotomi's POV felt pretty good at the beginning but it feels like the conclusion is bad since you never get to see her deal with what happens from her own POV. It ends abruptly after the sexual assault.
Zakuro's POV felt like it was just too much...She suffers so much but there's no focus on the good things in her life such as her relationship with her mom or Kotomi. I think that when writing characters who are suffering greatly, it's important to have a few moments of happiness in between so you can understand the kind of person they are outside of the traumatic events. You have to show what the character lost over this event, or what the character does to cope with this event. Maybe I'm holding it to too high a standard since her life is supposed to be so miserable she finds purpose in her delusions, but the game makes it clear she has some positive aspects of her life that it just doesn't show.
Takuji's POV is when it gets pretty good. The text makes you feel like you're going insane as you read it. The mathematical formulas in the text to explain the unexplainable makes you feel crazy. The prose isn't exactly beautiful or anything like that but it does a really good job of making you feel like you're losing it, especially when reality and hallucinations mix. The end of this route is as expected but it still feels like a worthwhile conclusion with Yukito's words.
I thought the final message was very nice as well.
